Late Shift is an interactive film and full motion videoadventurevideo game written and directed by Tobias Weber. The participation film technology behind the title was developed by CtrlMovie. The title was screened at many international film festivals, including The New York Film Festival, Raindance Film Festival, and the Festival du nouveau cinéma.

Gameplay[edit]

Late Shift is presented as a movie with live-action cut scenes. During the movie, the player is able to make choices, but the game doesn't pause during the choices, so they must be made in real-time. There are no puzzles in the game; all user interaction is done via choices to influence the events of the game and lead to different endings.

Story[edit]

The playable character and main protagonist is Matthew Thompson, a college student who works as a parking lot attendant. One night, Matt finds himself embroiled in London's criminal underworld when he is forced to work with a group of armed robbers. He ends up befriending, possibly romantically, one of the members of the group; a young woman named May-Ling. The player's choices influence the events of the game and can lead to a variety of different endings resulting in different fates for Matt and May-Ling.

Late Shift received 'mixed or average' reviews, according to review aggregatorMetacritic.^[2][3][4][5]The Sunday Times named it 'the most important film of the year'^[10], The Guardian called it 'a digital experience to look out for^[11]'. The film won many awards, including a BAFTA Cymru Award^[12] (Best Game), 'Best Mobile/Tablet' and 'Most Creative and Original' at Game Connection Development Awards^[13] and 'Best Narrative' at BIG Festival Brazil.^[14] Further it was nominated for an IMG Award,^[15] for 'Visual Design' and 'Action and Adventure Game' at The Independent Game Developers' Association Awards 2017,^[16] and for 'Writing or Narrative Design' and 'Gameplay Innovation' at the 2018 Develop Awards.^[17]

Apart from the majority of positive reactions there were also a few critical voices. Vice deemed it an 'intriguing failure'.^[18]Eurogamer noted the game's continuity errors.^[19]

Studies have shown that exposure to bright blue light in the evening can affect your circadian rhythms and make it harder to fall asleep. Night Shift uses your computer's clock and geolocation to determine when it's sunset in your location. It then automatically shifts the colours in your display to the warmer end of the spectrum. In the morning it returns the display to its regular settings.

How to set up Night Shift

Make sure that your Mac meets the system requirements for Night Shift, then follow these steps:

1. Choose Apple menu () > System Preferences, then click Displays.
2. Click the Night Shift tab.

Schedule: Create a custom Night Shift schedule or have Night Shift turn on automatically from sunset to sunrise.

Manual: Control Night Shift manually.

• If Night Shift is off, select the checkbox to turn Night Shift on until 7 a.m. If you're using a schedule, Night Shift automatically turns off at the scheduled time.
• If Night Shift is on, deselect the tickbox to turn Night Shift off. If you're using a schedule, Night Shift turns on again at the scheduled time.

Colour Temperature: Drag the slider to make the colour temperature more or less warm when Night Shift is on. Warmer colour temperatures show more yellow and less blue.

You can control the Manual setting from Notification Center as well. Click the Notification Center icon in the menu bar or swipe left with two fingers from the right side of your trackpad. Then scroll up to reveal the Night Shift setting.
