EVE does seem to be almost a space trading sim / elite like game.But in fact it is remake of Ultima online PVP enviroment in space
( and i quote one of EVE players and fans )

I guess Infinity is the only thing developed for future , and Jumpgate Evolution may well be worth checking, when we get more detail

Frontier are promising to make a multiplayer version of Elite 4.
But they are truely miserable nerds with a track record of not getting funded for anything more exciting than Wallce and Grommit.
Keep an eye out for Jumpgate: Evolution. It supposedly has what you are looking for. It is undergoing a revamp, though I am not sure of the release date on that.

I'm looking forward to the Firefly MMORPG as well actually, a lot of the concepters seem to be pre-cu players.
